School District's Inclement Weather Cancellation Procedures (2010-11)

From this month's Chalktalk Superintendent’s Message by Dr. Young:

School Cancellation Procedures

The impending holiday season signals the beginning of potential inclement weather and my need to communicate our school delay and cancellation procedures. As have been our procedures in the past, on inclement weather days we will make all reasonable efforts to decide, with input from the highway department personnel and our transportation providers, on whether a school delay or cancellation is necessary by 5:45 a.m. We work very hard to make all such decisions public by 6 a.m., when possible. School delay and cancellation announcements will be made on the local television news channels 22 and 40 as well as on the local radio using WHMP (99.3 FM or AM 1400) or WTTT (AM 1430).

If there are questions about the conditions of the road, we will err on the side of caution, as ensuring the safety of our students and employees is always our top priority. While we seek to avoid such situations, there may be times when we need to dismiss students who are already in school early to ensure we can get everyone home safely. Under such circumstances, we will attempt to contact the parents/guardians of our students, particularly our elementary students. To assist us, we ask that you also stay tuned to the local TV and radio during questionable days to follow developing weather conditions. Parents/guardians are always free to make their own choices about road conditions and to keep their child home or to pick him/her up early when they have concerns.

WWLP (Channel 22)
WGGB (Channel 40)
Note: WHMP and WTTT did not have Web sites dedicated to school closings as of 11/29.

Hadley Park & Rec: Play-Well Teknologies classes

February 21-25, 2011 and April 18-22, 2011
(you must register for each week separately)

OPEN TO GIRLS & BOYS GRADES K-5
Pre-Engineering session from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM for Grades K-2
Engineering FUNdamentals session from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for Grades 3-5 and returning students

Play-Well TEKnologies provides project-based programs designed to teach principles and methods of engineering, architecture, and science to grades K – 8th, utilizing LEGO™ and other building systems. We strive to build problem-solving skills, provide an opportunity for creative expression, foster a greater appreciation of how things work, and encourage the qualities of inquisitiveness, self- reliance, and self-confidence in children. We do this in the context of fun-filled engineering and architectural projects that both the children and our instructors enjoy!

Pre-Engineering
Have your child become a Play-Well Engineer! Students will build cities, bridges, and motorized cars/planes and explore the many creative possibilities of engineering with the LEGO® system. With access to over 100,000 pieces of LEGO, your child will have the opportunity to build what they have only dreamed of with the support of an experienced Play-Well Engineering instructor to guide them.

Engineering FUNdamentals
Do you like building things? Design and build motorized machines, catapults, pyramids, demolition derby cars, buildings and other constructions out of LEGO® bricks. While exploring engineering, architecture and physics, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Returning students are given new projects that build on previous projects and concepts.

(This class is not affiliated with the LEGO Group.)

PTO offers to help local organizations coordinate fundraiser dates

Hadley is home to many great organizations working for the benefit of our children and our community. With all that goodwill and volunteerism comes a LOT of fundraisers. The PTO is aware that sometimes family and friends can feel bombarded by fundraisers at certain times of the year. Denise Devine has generously offered to create an email list of representatives from local organizations that run fundraisers to help those organizations be aware of what others are doing, and, we hope, coordinate enough to avoid overwhelming our supporters.

If you are a member of a Hadley organization that runs fundraisers, please suggest that your fundraising chair, or the volunteers who organize your various fundraisers, contact Denise and request to be part of this email list.

Click here to email Denise your contact information.

Thank you!
