School District's Inclement Weather Cancellation Procedures (2009-10)

A reminder as winter weather makes its way into our area! From this month's Chalktalk Superintendent’s Message by Dr. Young:

School Cancellation Procedures

Although the temperature is close to 60 degrees outside today it won't be too long before we start to experience cooler days and nights followed by the famous New England snow. As has been our practice in the past, all efforts, on inclement weather days, will be to make a formal decision about school cancellation as early as possible, often by 5:45 a.m. with public announcements beginning at 6:00 a.m. School delay and cancellation announcements will be made via the television on Channel 22 and Channel 40 and through the local radio using WHMP (99.3 FM or AM 1400) or WTTT (AM 1430).

Please note that if there are doubts about the conditions of the road, our practice will continue to be to "err" on the side of an abundance of caution, as ensuring the safety of our students and employees is the utmost priority. Once the children are in school, we will make every effort to keep them through the school day. There may, however, be times when keeping students in school once they have arrived is not prudent due to worsening road conditions. Under such circumstances, we will make every effort to reach each child's parents or guardians to notify them of the early dismissal. During those questionable days, we would also request that parents and guardians stay tuned to the TV and radio to follow the developing weather situation as well. Parents/guardians are also free to make a personal decision regarding road conditions and keep their child home from school or to pick them up early when they have concerns.

Predicting the weather and responding accurately to weather forecasts is perhaps the most challenging assignment given to school superintendents, as road conditions can vary widely between and within communities. Fortunately Hadley has a highly capable highway crew and superintendent who work closely with us when we make cancellation, delay or early dismissal decisions.

Note: WHMP and WTTT did not have Web sites dedicated to school closings as of 12/8.
